Big reveals-Pottery delights

Many potters will tell you that a final pottery fire in kiln, and waiting anxiously for the kiln to cool down sufficiently to then open to reveal results is one of the key highlights. Fraught with anticipation and often disappointments, there are often pleasant surprises too!

So, today’s kiln opening, revealed the whole range of emotions. A failure- an experimental piece broke, another piece where colour of glaze wasn’t as expected (even though I’ve used same many times before and applied same technique and fire schedule etc ), and then the pure delights of a piece that was made for the first time, and turned out better than expected. See main photo above.

It all part of the joy of pottery- win some and lose some, but the winners make up for the disappointments.

I’m feeling comfortable with the items already made for North Norfolk Open Studio next month. Probably slightly ahead of schedule- that means I can indulge and relax a bit & try out some even bigger pieces. I am trying to build up a collection of pottery makes that are connected in some way, whether shape, form or colours- I feel the need to develop an identity. I’ve also ensure my makes will carry my makers stamp! This is a challenge in itself as the clay mustn’t be too soft to lose the definition of the mark on the piece, and if clay is too hard the mark won’t be visible!

I’m thinking about the set up/display of my stall at Open Studio in Cromer (Community Centre), and made a few purchases of props to help with display (that’s a few wooden box plinths to those unacquainted with such things).

I try to make things which will appeal to my audience – trying out different things and approaches. I often seek inspiration from other artists too, not just potters but painters too. Ultimately, I’ll make things that I would like myself.

I’m attending the Anglian Potter Exhibition with fellow potter friends tomorrow so intend to update with a further blog on the event here later. Have a good week and keep potting if you can.
