Welcome to my first blog!
It seems apt to kick off with Nick White who has been instrumental in both the setting up and ongoing maintenance of the North Norfolk Open Studio Website and for helping me personally in creating this very web page!
He is known as the “man with the spanners at the North Norfolk Website”. (He is also an artist himself at Open Studio, and a renowned photographer specialising in the music business – you can see his website at: https://nickwhite.uk/).
We met up with Nick last Sunday at an open-ish garden event of his where we were introduced to his partner, Patti, and visited their wonderful oak-beamed thatched space & home studio & garden to learn more about some exotic South American vegetables which he has grown very successfully in his own garden.
One of these is yacon! (The other main crop is mashua).
Yes, you’ve heard it first here. I can see this crop making waves on Gardener’s World soon!! It’s a delicious root crop that can be eaten raw. The taste reminds me of a crunchy carrot combined with a fruity taste of apple!
Nick showed us how it grows, and how it can be used in various dishes, including in a delicious golden nectar form- think maple syrup!
What a delightful experience! And I’m now eager to plant a few yacons in my own garden this year!
Thank you Nick- both for the veggie intro and your work on my own web site!
Hope you all enjoyed my first (hopefully of many) blog post.. I’ll try to make them connected in some way with pottery, art and gardening!
Have a good week!
